Adult citrus mites are purple red with 13 pairs of long with bristles on their back. The eggs are bright red and can be found on young leaves, preferably along the main veins of leaves. Citrus mite is not able to survive under hot and dry conditions or continuous humid conditions. Outdoor crops usually show a citrus mite population decrease during hot summers. Adult mites live several weeks and increase their number very quickly in suitable conditions. 

Citrus mite damage and distribution

When citrus mites are present, more damage is found on leaves than on fruits. The eggs are deposited on the upper side of young leaves, where most damage is done. Damaged leaves show a pattern of yellow spots. This hampers photosynthesis and increases the chance of dehydration. During heavy infestations leaves can drop early. Citrus mites are easily dispersed by wind.
