How to recognize thrips

Thrips are the smallest winged insects, even though the wings are difficult to spot. With a microscope, the wings become visible and you can also see that they have a fringe at the end of the body. This is very characteristic for thrips. Thrips have a broad host range and can be found on both leaves and flowers. Some species of thrips pupate on or in the upper part of the soil. All thrips species lay eggs inside the leaf tissue. The young stages hatch from the eggs and move around the plant. Young stages are usually lightly colored, but adult thrips can differ a lot in color, ranging from light yellow to almost black. Most species are very mobile. Especially in summer, thrips populations can develop really quickly.

Thrips damage and distribution

Thrips species can be divided in roughly two groups: leaf-dwelling and flower-dwellingThe leaf-dwelling species feed mainly on plant saps and not on pollen, while flower-dwelling thrips feed from both plant saps and pollen. Thrips scratch the leaf surface to obtain plant saps and unlike many other insects they do not puncture the leaf. Thrips damage usually manifests as silver spots with black dots, which are the thrips feces. In flowers and flowerbuds thrips causes sucking damage, which can manifest either as spots or as deformations of plant tissue. Some thrips species transmit viruses, which makes them even more feared by growers.

How to control thrips

Thrips are a major problem in many different crops, such as horticulture, ornamentals, seed production, herbs, soft fruit and agriculture. Western flower thrips is the most common thrips species in greenhouses, but other species, like Echinothrips, can also be very problematic.

There are numerous products available to control thrips, ranging from predatory mites and predatory bugs to predatory thrips and parasitoids. The parasitoid THRIPOCTENUS JAVAE is a very specific product that is only effective against a single thrips species, namely the greenhouse thripsOur other products are effective against multiple thrips species and work under different conditions. Some predate on thrips pupae that live in the soil, while others mostly are soil- or leafdwelling predators which predate mainly on younger stages of thrips

Which product is most suitable for a certain situation is very difficult to predict. Products such as THRIPOR and LIMONICA are ideal, since these biological control agents can also sustain themselves when the pest is absent, for example by feeding on pollen. Other biological control agents, such as SWIRSKI MITE, feed on multiple pests, which can be an advantage when crops are infested by several pest species.

The predatory thrips FRANKLINOTHRIPS VESPIFORMIS occurs mainly on the leaves and is therefore very effective against leaf-dwelling thrips such as Echinothrips and Japanese flower thrips.

BLUE STICKY TRAPS can be applied for the monitoring of thrips. In addition, these sticky traps will also catch a small part of the pestWhen other flying pests, such as whitefly, are present in the crop in addition to thripsYELLOW STICKY TRAPS are a better option.
