SPICAL ULTI-MITE biological control spider mite
What does SPICAL look like?

The product SPICAL contains the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus. Adult predatory mites are pale white to yellow orange and tear-shaped with short legs. The eggs are translucent to white and look like spider mite eggs. Eggs are deposited on the underside of leaves. When nymphs and adult predatory mites feed from spider mites, they are translucent white with an x-shaped orange marking on the back. When predatory mites are starving, they appear skinny and become more lightly coloured.

SPICAL predatory mites
How does SPICAL work?

The predatory mites puncture their prey and suck them dry. Neoseiulus californicus larval stages prefer young spider mites. The adult females can eat all stages. When prey is abundant, N. californicus will eat less spider mites than Phytoseiulus persimilis. N. californicus can also survive on other mites than spider mites and on pollen or even a couple of days without prey. Therefore, N. californicus is more effective at low prey abundancy than Phytoseiulus persimilis.

When is SPICAL applied?

SPICAL is used in greenhouses and indoor plantings to control twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), broad mite (Polyphagotarsonemus latus), cyclamen mite (Tarsonemus pallidus), citrus mite (Panonychus citri) and BrevipalpusConsider multiple introductions. The product is sensitive to several chemical pesticides. SPICAL is less sensitive to (residual) pesticides than Phytoseiulus persimilis. Ask advice for deployment strategies.
